was appointed provisionally to be a member
of the Legislative Council in the place of
Mr. Beith during the latter's temporary
absence from the Colony. This provisional
appointment would therefore cease when
Mr. Beith's term of appointment came to an
end, namely on the 14th of March. I note
that by the instrument, a copy of which
accompanied your despatch, you have
provisionally appointed Mr. Paterson to be
a member of the Council on the occurrence of
the vacancy caused by the expiration of
Mr. Beith's term of appointment. In
accordance with the provisions of Clause XVI(iii)
of the Royal Instructions the period of
Mr. Paterson's appointment will now date
from the 15th March, 1934, which is the
date of the Instrument provisionally
appointing him. There is therefore no need
for you to re-appoint Mr. Paterson on the
16th April, 1934.
I have, etc.
